Rolling with the music: Brett Sylvia’s Hair Ball performs with Allie in “Listless”

MFA Sculpture Thesis Exhibition: Spherical Lucidity

December 2015: The UMass Dartmouth College of Visual and Performing Arts presented  Master of Fine Arts Thesis Exhibition and Performance. “Spherical Lucidity,” a solo show by Brett Sylvia, MFA in sculpture, featured spherical kinetic form in short performance followed by artwork on display at Seastreak Ferry Terminal Building, 49 State Pier, New Bedford, MA.

“A potent consistency of the spherical shape appears within my dreams and nightmares.” – Brett writes in his statement. “This is coupled with fur and hair, both primitive effective fibers that communicate movement and life.”

Hermetical

The Hermetical is a kinetic sculpture animated from the inside. The audience’s reactions, be that of fear or joy, constitute the essence of the one-man performance from inside the hairy ball. The materials used are 100% natural and contribute greatly to the intended impression. The hair ball is about 7 feet in diameter, is able to roll freely and bounce up and down.
